Shelley Lancaster

Hi, my name is Shelley and my journey to massage began from the opposite side of the spectrum! After high school I took some time off, then went to UNCW where after a semester of hard studying, I earned the prestigious Champion McDowell Davis Scholarship and the William S. Deloach Award for academic excellence in chemistry. After graduation I went to work at GE Nuclear “playing” with uranium in the lab, getting a promotion and quickly learning that the corporate world was not for me. A friend had recently lost her office manager for her dental practice and asked me if I was interested in taking over, so I left GE and took over her practice, turning it around and helping it thrive. Twenty years later she retired and sold the practice and gave me a retirement at the ripe old age of 40. After working in a private practice and seeing how people came in and needed help, I realized I wanted to do something different with my life. How, I wondered, can I give back and help people heal and feel better?

Massage school beckoned and I went back to school to become a massage therapist, realizing I had found my passion. I’ve taken multiple continuing education classes since graduation and love helping people get well. My favorite massages are ones that involve using multiple modalities, such as cupping, heat and therapeutic work. Figuring out what is wrong with someone and combining treatments to get them well is the science behind the magic of what I do. I look forward to helping you feel well and heal well!

Hi, my name is Denise and my story begins with running a circus! Not a true circus of course, but after being a stay at home mom to four boys for more than a decade, (which is about the same as running a circus), I decided it was time to pursue a career for myself.

I looked into Nursing and spoke with many nurses but was surprised to find that many in that profession were burnt out, overworked and unhappy. One nurse did say to me that what she missed the most in the profession was when they used to give their patients massages in the evenings, and how that was what she loved doing the most. This inspired me to look into the massage field, and shortly thereafter I was attending school in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the years I have been fortunate to work in Asheville, N.C. and Raleigh, N.C., with a vast array of clients that included professional athletes. Now I am in Wilmington and love working at Relax!

I have been happily practicing massage for close to 10 years now. The best part? Helping people. In so many ways, on so many levels. Having a client come in with their issues (pain, stress, etc.) and walk out feeling 10 years younger and a lot less stressed. I have found over the years that deep tissue work appeals to me and it’s an interesting therapy when done well. It becomes a type of dance with the client, to provide just the right amount of pressure without there being too much. I enjoy Hot Stone massage, and tend to give my clients a combination of techniques with some cranial sacral and reflexology techniques added in. I can’t really say which I love the most, the detailed work of a deep tissue massage or the long, flowing, de-stressing rhythms of a Swedish massage. They all have their place and are much needed in our fast paced world.

Hi! My name is Kelly and my story includes witch doctors and magic! The magic of the Ivory Coast that is…..

I was an art major at App State in 2000. I was lucky enough to take a trip with the Appalachian Art Department to the Ivory Coast in West Africa. I was completely blown away by their culture and art. While I was there I met a massage therapist and became really close with her. We would talk about our lives and the more she spoke of the healing arts, the more I became interested. While we were there we were also studying the local diviners or witch doctors. Between meeting this woman and seeing her passion for helping others heal themselves, and the complete magical setting of the country I was in, I came home a new woman.

I got my first massage and Reiki session and was hooked! I enrolled in massage school at The North Carolina School of the Healing Arts in Raleigh, N.C., (now known as the Healing Arts and Massage School), graduated in 2003 and have been in love ever since.

I moved to San Diego, C.A. where I continued to practice and get more education. I have had training in Hot Stones, Reflexology, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue and Reiki. I believe art and massage have a lot in common and view my massage as an extension of my art and creativity. I love helping others through my art of bodywork and energy healing!

Hello! My name is Danielle Patterson. While pursuing my Associates in Arts at Cape Fear Community College, someone told me I would never make it as a massage therapist. Well, it wasn’t long after I graduated from CFCC that I decided to prove him wrong and went to Miller Motte College to get certified in massage therapy.I completed the required clinical training and graduated with honors, but it was during my training that I fell in love with massage. It became more than just a career idea when I discovered what massage could do for people and the changes it could make in their lives, it became a passion! In addition to the training and experience I have in the core massage modalites, I am also certified in: Thai Yoga Massage, Reflexology, and Qi gong Breathing Meditation.

In the summer of 2015 I was given the opportunity to shadow an Occupational Massage Therapist who lives in Thorton, Colorado. We had been conversing for several months and I decided to broaden my horizons and set out on an adventure to visit her. Although we had never met in person, I knew I was in for a surprise. She is an Occupational Massage Therapist who works with children and adults with severe, trauma related disabilities. We had a week’s worth of clients set up and we saw 7-8 patients a day. I thought to myself, “Wow, that’s more than I see in a day.” The main difference was we were in the comfort of the client’s home and their familiar surroundings of family and caretakers. All of the clients were nonverbal, confined to wheelchairs, and experienced mild and severe epileptic seizures. There was one client is particular that struck me that week, a little girl who was about 4 yrs old. As soon as we arrived at her house and entered the room, she was excited for her massage. I watched my mentor work with her range of motion, and perform Shiatsu techniques to improve her digestive system. It was an amazing and gratifying experience. During the hour I witnessed a connection and trust between the little girl and the massage therapist that was very special. I felt such gratification in my heart, knowing that the little girl was receiving positive benefit from the massage work, mentally, physically, and emotionally. The gratification that I felt that day is what I feel everyday being a massage therapist and helping my clients!

The journey to massage therapy began at age 8.My Great Grandmother and I sat on the edge of her bed so my mother could massage our legs. I was hooked but it would take several years of trying different things before I realized that massage was my calling.

The business education I received early on never felt like a fit. I went to college and worked on a business degree, I worked in private home health care and in the restaurant industry and none of it felt right. One day, in 2006,I had an epiphany! A massage career would expand my knowledge base of holistic health and allow me to serve in a meaningful way.I went to Soothing Arts Massage School and found my true passion.

My ability to listen along with a strong drive to learn, grow and always give my best has helped me grow in a field that is ever changing and developing. Today I specialize in custom massage using many modalities. Some of the modalities I am trained in are: deep tissue techniques including myofascial release, trigger point therapy, sports massage, full body stretching, reflexology, injury rehab, oncology and lost limb care. I enjoy working with seniors. I also do Energy work such as Reiki and Healing Touch.

I love giving back in ways that are meaningful and have participated in many charity and outreach events such as Special Olympics,, Strongman and Iron Man Competitions, Panhandle Boxing Academy and Professional Body Building, Veterans Administration Medical Center and the Leland Police Department.

I look forward to meeting you soon and helping you feel your best!

Trish

Hello, my name is Trish Patterson and I gave my first massage in elementary school to teachers during story time while the other kids had milk and cookies. I think I was born with a passion and gift for massage! Not understanding or realizing my gift, I dreamed of being a surgeon, vet, artist or dancer. While I worked other jobs and lived around the country, I still found time to massage friends, family and co-workers, all the while hearing “you should be a professional Massage Therapist”.

It all clicked when I moved to Wilmington in 1999 and saw an ad for massage school at Coastal Carolina Institute of Massage Therapy. I enrolled immediately and graduated in 2000 and my lifelong avocation became a beloved vocation! Over the years I have fine-tuned my craft to include amazing Swedish massage, therapeutic and deep tissue massage, reflexology, sports massage and hot stone massage. I am an environmentalist, vegetarian and local advocate and supporter of film, theater and the arts. I love dance, art and holistic healing so I encourage clients to find healing methods that truly help them.

Being an intuitive and empathetic listener, I’m completely quiet during sessions allowing clients to get into the Zen Zone …..almost asleep and sometimes even snoring during their massage! If you need a non-judgmental ear, I am always there to listen. I love working with clients from all walks of life and I look forward to helping you.
